The number of pigs in Ukraine decreased by 691.2 thousand heads or - 9.2% over a year.
According to the State Statistics Committee, the number of pigs as of September 1, 2017 totals 6816,5 thousand heads, while for the same period of 2016 it was 7508 thousand heads. Thus, the number of pigs in Ukraine for the year decreased by 691.2 thousand heads or - 9.2%.
Experts of the Association of Livestock Breeders of Ukraine note that the reason for the reduction of the pig industry is obvious: it is an epidemic of African swine fever, which has already affected almost all regions of Ukraine.

Back in 2015, we predicted that if you do not take urgent measures to fight against ASF, Ukraine can remain without a favorite product, the chairman of the Association of Livestock Breeders of Ukraine Iryna Palamar has said. - What we are observing now is that the number of livestock is declining, the prices for pigs for the consumer have almost doubled. This is despite the fact that the economic situation for producers is very good. At the market meat deficit is at least 35%, meat prices are rising. If at the end of 2016 the cost of meat averaged 29 UAH / kg, today it is about 52-54 UAH. Ukraine has already caused damage to 1.1 billion UAH.

Our Association of Livestock Breeders of Ukraine, six months ago, together with producers, as well as with scientists in cooperation with the State Service of Ukraine for Food Safety and Consumer Protection, developed a project on "Program for Prevention and Control of the Spread of African Swine Fever in Ukraine for 2017-2022", which was submitted back on February, 2017 by the State Service of Ukraine for Food Safety and Consumer Protection to the Ministry of Agrarian Policy for consideration and approval, as well as the subsequent transfer for consideration and adoption of the government. However, until now the document, unfortunately, is not accepted.
