The content of radionuclides in the worst samples of Ukrainian milk is half that of the permissible standards in the European Union. This was written by Volodymyr Lapa, chairman of the State Service for Food Safety and Consumer Protection, on his Facebook page commenting on a study recently released by The Independent, agroday.com.ua reported.

The latter refers to the fact that in some regions of Ukraine the level of radioactive contamination of milk is five times higher than the norm.

Milk for testing was selected in private farms in the Rivne region, 200 km from the site of the Chernobyl disaster. After laboratory tests, the researchers stated that the content of the radioactive cesium compound in the samples was exceeded in 6 samples out of 14 for adults, and in 8 for children.

Iryna Labunska, a scientist from Exeter University, stated that 30 years after the accident, Ukrainians continue to drink radioactive milk and other food products. "This creates a danger for every organ in the human body," she said.

Volodymyr Lapa noted that in the Rivne region such a thing as "critical populated areas" really exists. That is, those that suffered the greatest radiation damage. However, this does not mean that there contaminated food is still eaten. What is more, it concerns all Ukrainian milk.

In Ukraine hygienic standards for radionuclides approved by the Ministry of Health Order No. 256 dated 03.05.2006. If we take, for example, the standard for the same cesium-137. For raw milk and a number of dairy products, it is set at 100 Bq/kg, for butter and cheese -200, for milk powder - 500.

The European legislation on this subject is in force regulation 2016/52. According to the document, the permissible contamination of dairy products with radionuclides of the cesium group is 1000 Bq/kg.

"So, what do we have in the end? The content of radionuclides in milk is half that of the permissible standards in the EU in the worst samples of milk of the most affected communities (and not in regions)," the chairman of the State Service of Ukraine for Food Safety and Consumer Protection concluded.
