The ceremonial transfer of high-precision PCR equipment to identify the agent of ASF (to be installed in state laboratories in Kiev and three regions of Ukraine) will be held on February 1, 2018.

African swine fever (ASF) is one of the biggest challenges facing pig breeding in Ukraine. Beginning in 2012, as of January 2018, 324 ASF outbreaks were recorded. However, this figure, most likely, does not reflect the real picture, because in the way of timely and reliable diagnostics there are not only low awareness of ASF, but also the lack of equipment and reagents, and, most importantly, qualified personnel in state competent bodies.

According to experts, if urgent measures are not taken, the burden of negative consequences for the industry will grow. Pig breeding is an important sector, not only economically, but also socially. It is estimated that 36% of all meat consumed by Ukrainians is pork, and the pigs on average generate 1065 UAH of income for the rural household each year.

FAO and the EBRD have joined forces to assist state veterinary and sanitary inspection laboratories and veterinary faculties of agrarian universities in training diagnostic specialists, as well as participating in the re-equipment of laboratories, acquiring highly accurate diagnostic equipment and the necessary reagents. Training specialists to work on equipment for the timely detection of the agent of ASF will complement the state monitoring and financing programs and other measures to effectively overcome the disease.
