FAO continues to provide humanitarian assistance to those affected by the armed conflict in the east of Ukraine, paying special attention to the rural population living along the line of contact. This time around 250 families located within 8 km of the zone receive young rabbits for domestic meat production.

This was reported by the press service of FAO.

Distribution of animals takes place this week in Bakhmut district of Donetsk region and Popasnianskyi district of Luhansk region. Each of the beneficiary households receives two New Zealand White Rabbits to increase their own production of high-protein meat as an economic alternative to large animals.

The beneficiary families will receive detailed instructions for caring for young rabbits both for future household consumption purposes and for commercial production. Rabbits will be delivered with high-quality metal cages with plastic inserts to prevent such a common disease as a poddermatitis.

"The conflict in the east of Ukraine affects those livelihoods that are of agricultural origin," says Farrukh Toirov, coordinator of the emergency assistance program in Ukraine.

"Given the specific nature of agriculture and based on the assessments of our experts, we determined that the cultivation of small animals in the household has a good potential. Small animal husbandry can be very profitable work for small farmers, providing employment for unemployed people and good income, and also helping to improve nutrition within families, " notes Toirov.

It bears reminding that in recent months, FAO assisted about 17 thousand farms located along the line of contact, by providing various types of agricultural means of production: sunflower seeds and corn, seed potatoes, equipment for drip irrigation, feed for livestock, and poultry.
