FAO will provide 2.75 thousand farmers in Eastern Ukraine with young poultry

"Each farmer gets a choice of 30 chickens, 25 turkeys or 25 ducklings. The supply of young poultry will increase egg production in the farms and give them the opportunity to enter local markets," was said by FAO on Thursday.

In addition, all beneficiaries receive detailed benefits for growing young poultry for their own consumption and for sale.

Previously, farmers received 10 kg of complex feed, the so-called "starter", to ensure full nutrition of the chicks.

According to the report, the organization will provide 32 villages of the Donetsk region and 19 villages of the Luhansk region with poultry in the period from 10 to 31 May.

"This is the second wave of poultry distribution within the framework of the current project to provide emergency assistance. Our experience of the past year shows that unemployed educated youth in rural areas can easily get income from the sale of grown poultry. Women and students can also engage in small business simultaneously with day activities," is said by FAO program manager Andre Arrias.

As noted in the message, over the period of 2016-2018 FAO supported about 35,000 households located in the 8-km zone from the line of demarcation, by different types of agricultural resources: vegetable seeds, drip irrigation systems, animal feeds, etc.

In the near future FAO intends to distribute young rabbits.

FAO's emergency assistance program in eastern Ukraine is funded by the governments of Canada and France, as well as FAO's own resources, whose overall goal is to increase food security for more than 45,000 farms in the east of the country. The program budget is $ 2.3 million.
