EU mission has started its work to assess the control of ASF in Ukraine

On September 25, 2018 the European Union mission began to assess the control system and measures taken to stabilize the epizootic situation of African swine fever (ASF) in Ukraine, according to the State Service of Ukraine for Food Safety and Consumer Protection.

The mission began its work with a meeting that was held in Kyiv under the chairmanship of the First Deputy Head of the State Service of Ukraine for Food Safety and Consumer Protection Andrii Zhuk and with the participation of representatives of the Food Safety and Veterinary Medicine Department of the the State Service of Ukraine for Food Safety and Consumer Protection, the State Research Institute for Laboratory Diagnostics and Veterinary and Sanitary Expertise, the State Forestry Agency Ukraine.

Representatives of the EU mission noted that the issues of the distribution of ASF are a common problem for the European continent. Therefore, it is necessary to fight it with joint efforts. To this end, the European Union financially supports the activities aimed at eliminating ASF, carrying out a complex of anti-epizootic measures, including awareness-raising among the population.

It is planned that during the visit to Ukraine the mission will be acquainted with the work of the State Scientific Research Institute for Laboratory Diagnostics and Veterinary and Sanitary Expertise, which is the national reference laboratory.

In addition, representatives of the mission will be acquainted with the work of the main departments of the State Service of Ukraine for Food Safety and Consumer Protection in Poltava, Odesa, Rivne, Volyn and Lviv regions, regional state laboratories, visit pig farms, meat processing plants, hunting facilities in these areas.

In Ukraine, the EU mission will work until October 4, 2018. Based on the results of its work, an appropriate report will be made public.
