Ukrainian veterinary laboratories received modern diagnostic equipment from the European Bank for Reconstruction and Development (EBRD) and the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO).

According to the organization, this equipment will strengthen the veterinary services in the country for the timely and accurate identification of African swine fever (ASF). The presentation was held during a meeting at the State Scientific Research Institute for Laboratory Diagnostics and the veterinary and sanitary examination.

"The fight against African swine fever begins with proper control of the disease at the state level and investments in better biosafety at the level of private companies," says Lesia Kuzmenko, deputy director, senior EBRD banker in Ukraine.

According to FAO in Ukraine Since 2012, there have been 326 outbreaks of the disease, which has already led to serious socio-economic consequences. "The new equipment for real-time polymerase chain reaction (RT-PCR) analysis - the only reliable diagnostic method for ASF - will allow state laboratories in Kiev, Zhytomyr, Sumy and Mykolaiv to contribute to the successful control of the disease and the early detection of ASF, and will help mitigate possible risks by improving local laboratory capacity and knowledge of diagnosis, " is said in the report.

According to the report, the veterinary services of Ukraine still cannot determine the actual level of prevalence of ASF. All because of the inability to quickly identify and confirm the diagnosis. In the future, FAO and the EBRD are aimed at forming partnerships between state laboratories and agrarian universities in Odessa, Sumy and Zhitomyr for the exchange of best practices in diagnostics. At the same time, the equipment transferred today will soon become available to laboratory workers and veterinary faculty students for study and work.
