ASF in Poland: conflicts between farmers and the veterinary service

In Poland, there were protests from farmers who demanded the canceling of the slaughter of healthy pigs in the fight against ASF. In their opinion, it makes no sense. They have a number of complaints about veterinary services, pigua.info reported.

As the protesters explained, each of them invested money in bringing their farms into compliance with strict requirements of biosafety. They built special disinfection barriers before entering the territory of farms, their territories were fenced, and the farms included only personnel and only in special clothes.  At the same time, as they say, the veterinary services randomly choose farms in which the virus is not found, and they destroy pigs there.

The essence of claims of pig breeders to veterinary services is that the owners of farms that are under the threat of very large fines cannot afford even the slightest violations associated with providing protection from disease in their farms. In turn, veterinarians can move between farms without using any means of biosafety. Some of the protesters even assumed that they could be the cause of the spread of the virus.

According to reports of the Chief Veterinary Officer of Poland, 24 outbreaks of ASF were recorded among domestic animals and 200 were recorded among wild pigs in July.
