The pre-New Year price increase in products is a trend that is familiar to consumers. However, is it worth waiting for record prices for pork on the eve of the holidays?
According to monitoring of purchasing and retail prices, pork prices on the shelves of the hypermarket will not reach new heights.
During 2017 consumers felt a significant rise in price of fresh and chilled pork, as well as its meat products. Thus, the highest prices for the main pork cut, which were fixed in September, showed an average of 1.5 times the growth compared to the January price tags. This change was quite appreciable, as fresh and chilled pork parts were 20-50 UAH / kg more expensive than at the beginning of the year.
It is worth noting that the upward movement of retail prices was not unfounded, but was in line with a similar price movement in purchases. In turn, the rise in price of live poultry became the reaction of the market to a smaller supply of slaughter pigs against a background of relatively stable domestic and active external demand, and took into account the increase in the costs of pork producers for production resources and the strengthening of biosafety measures.
Nevertheless, in December, purchasing prices are inferior to September's average of 8%, which is reflected in retail prices. In addition, during the last month of the year, prices on the market of bait have slight fluctuations. Accordingly, retail prices for pork, if revised, are insignificant. Thus, there are no prerequisites for a significant rise in price of chilled pork in supermarket chains in the pre-New Year week, and price tags will be "pleasant" for the consumer by 2-10% than in September.
