Ukraine produces more than consumes

In the season 2017/2018 Ukraine has balances surplus for all major crops.
This was reported by the First Deputy Minister of Agrarian Policy and Food of Ukraine Maksym Martyniuk during a government meeting, reporting on the interim results of harvesting.

In general, the gross grain harvest in Ukraine in 2017 is expected to be within the range of 61-63 million tons, which fully satisfies the domestic needs and the food security of the state, and also creates a high potential for export deliveries. As for the group of early grains (wheat, rye, barley), the collection rate is the second largest in the modern history of Ukraine.

Despite the generally unfavorable weather conditions, their influence was uneven across Ukraine, so in some areas it was possible to achieve record yields, the First Deputy Minister has said. Thus, a record yield of barley (34.3 centners per hectare), rye (28.3 centners per hectare) and rapeseed (27.6 centners per hectare) was recorded.

The structure of wheat production is dominated by food classes (60%), which makes it possible to increase the production of flour for both domestic and foreign markets. Also, the current season was the first for more than 10 years, when Ukraine completely provided itself with rye.

Considering the significant overproduction in all food crops, the balance sheets do not give any grounds for the growth of prices in the consumer market.

In particular, production is expected to have:

- flour - 2.2 million tons with domestic consumption of 1.8 million tons;

- buckwheat - 185 thousand tons of buckwheat with an internal demand of about 150 thousand tons;

- oils - about 6 million tons with domestic consumption of 400 thousand tons;

- sugar - 2 million tons with an internal demand of 1.5 million tons;

- potatoes - 20.5 million tons with domestic consumption of about 6.3 million tons;

- vegetables - 8.3 million tons with domestic consumption of 6.7-7.0 million tons.

In addition, the expected harvest of cereals is:

- wheat - 25.7 million tons with domestic consumption of 9.6 million tons, of which 4.7 million tons is used for food needs;

- rye - 490 thousand tons, which ensures domestic consumption in full;

- barley - 8.2 million tons with domestic consumption of 3.9 million tons;

- maize - more than 27 million tons, of which 7.5 million tons will be used to meet domestic needs.

An additional factor in ensuring price stability can be the development of farms that are mainly oriented to the domestic market and thus can neutralize the pressure, exert external prices on the food market, Maksym Martyniuk has said.

It bears reminding that in the draft State Budget for 2018, the government proposes to allocate 1 billion UAH for the support and development of farms.
