In Lithuania the second case of African swine fever (ASF) was recorded this year, according to a press release from the State Food and Veterinary Service, pigua.info reported

The outbreak was recorded in a small pig farm in the Pašvitinys village of the Pakruojo district.

The infection was found on the farm, where three sows and six pigs were fattened. The diagnosis of ASF was confirmed at the National Institute for the Evaluation of Food and Veterinary Risks.

After confirming the outbreak of ASF, all the pigs at the infection site were slaughtered. The primary disinfection of the entire farm and a complete epizootic examination were carried out.

The first outbreak of ASF in Lithuania this year occurred between January 31 and February 9. Then 130 infected wild boars were recorded.

At the end of last year the Baltic States suffered significant losses from the swine fever. In Estonia and Latvia two large commercial pig farms had to be liquidated after the ASF outbreaks. Because of the outbreak of the ASF 6647 pigs were slaughtered in Estonia, 14812 in Latvia, and 14812 in Latvia. In Lithuania, 710 foci of infection were detected in the wild throughout the year.
