Poland: pork from the ASF zones goes on sale

In July the government adopted a draft amendment proposed by the Ministry of Agriculture and Development of the Village of Poland to the law on specific activities related to the emergence of African swine fever (ASF). The amendments make it possible to increase the use of pork from the ASF zones and thereby unlock the purchase of live animals in quarantine zones. Changes should touch more than 5 thousand farms, pigua.info reported.

Now, without a tender, meat-packing plants can only supply meat products from pork, obtained from pigs, which were kept on farms in quarantine zones for at least two months before slaughter. If the new law goes into effect, the meat-packing plants will be able to sell easily as well the meat of healthy pigs from farms in the ASF zones.

Farm owners located in the ASF zones also want to abolish the ban on the slaughter of pigs on the farms. In their opinion, in a situation when they cannot sell fattened pigs, they should be able to slaughter them for their own needs.

In turn, the National Union of Pig Producers also supports slaughter resolution for their own needs, but notes that it must be carried out in slaughterhouses that are under the supervision of the veterinary inspection. If approved by the Sejm, the new rules will be in effect at the end of September 2018.
