As of February 1, Ukraine has 5.99 million pigs, less than 8.2% compared to the same date last year.

According to analysts, among the main reasons for reducing the number of pigs is the renewal of livestock by large industrial players. And the spread of African swine fever in the household sector.

"A swifter decline in the number of pigs is observed in the households. So, in early February, there were 10.3% fewer animals than the year before - 2.66 thousand heads. Note that this figure is significantly behind the number of pigs fixed in this sector in early 2018 - 5.7%, " say experts.

The reduction in the number of pigs was reflected in the revision of the area for the first month of the year at the enterprises.

"Industrial pig farms contain 3,33 thousand pigs, and the gap from the rate of February 1, 2017 is 6.4%. The volume of growth in the live weight of pigs in January was 4% - 43 thousand less than a year earlier, and the sale of pigs for slaughter "sank" by 11% - to 37.7 thousand. On the other hand, only 87.6% of the live The weight of the pigs was sent to slaughter, which forms good preconditions for the recovery of the industry, " say experts.

And they added that more pigs were sold for meat than grown in only 5 regions of Ukraine: Volyn, Dnipropetrovsk, Zhytomyr, Poltava and Chernivtsi regions.
