Such data was announced during the conference of the IFCN research network, which was held on June 11 in Ireland. Today the world produces about 876 million tons of milk per year, according to Infagro.

IFCN's Managing Director, Dr Torsten Hemme, said: "The market will need more milk. The growth in demand is due not only to an increase in the number of people living on the planet, but also to an increase in per capita consumption due to increased prosperity and world investment in the development of dairy products".

The founder of IFCN stressed that the increased demand would be covered by a higher world supply of milk. Experts of the research network are confident that the farms will intensify their production systems. "By 2030 IFCN forecasts an increase in milk production and demand in general by 35%," Torsten Hemme said.

In the short term, analysts expect a steady increase in the supply of milk throughout the world. In 2017 world milk production grew by almost 4%, which is much higher than the growth rate of 2016. However, in 2018 the pace will slow down significantly.

The key factors in slowing the growth of milk production in 2018 are the abnormal weather conditions in New Zealand, the EU and Argentina, as well as the difficult economic situation of US dairy farmers.

In the second half of 2018 IFCN predicts that the growth in demand and supply will be more consistent with the expected world price level for milk at 35-37 US dollars or 30-32 euros per 100 kg of milk.
