The Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO) plans to begin work in Ukraine on two important problems - antimicrobial resistance and the need to reduce food waste. This was said in an interview with Agravery.com by the coordinator of development programs of FAO in Ukraine Mykhailo Malkov.

"The first problem is the top topic in the world today. We all face the situation when a person, who is ill, starts taking antibiotics, and then they do not work for some reason; we need to look for others. This happens because a person becomes resistant to the action of certain antibiotics," he said.

Mykhailo Malkov stressed that there are two reasons for this: incorrect use of the antibiotics, or they can get to us with food through traditional products of plant growing or animal husbandry. After all, antibiotics are added for the regulation of growth and other purposes.

"Not all enterprises comply with the rules of biosafety and the norms of antibiotic use. Therefore, we, with a number of global donors, began to build this program and will soon launch it," the FAO expert said.

The second large-scale project is a significant reduction of food waste and food losses. Mykhailo Malkov explained how FAO plans to launch it in our country.

"First, we will make an assessment of the situation in the major cities of Ukraine, and then launch a pilot project in one of them. For example, it can be Lviv that is a famous center for gastronomic tourism, which suffers from a "garbage" problem. It will be necessary to significantly reduce the organic component of this waste from the restaurants, supermarkets, citizens’ houses," he said.

He also noted that, together with the local authorities, it would be necessary to build the system in such a way that the waste is recycled as efficiently as possible with the minimum budget for these purposes.
