One of the important reasons for the weakening of foreign trade during 2016-2017 is the spread of African swine fever in Ukraine.

This is reported by PigUA.info.

"It is this disease that prevents the opening of new markets and the strengthening of positions on existing ones is also questionable. So, in 2016 five countries declined from Ukrainian pork - neighboring Russia, Belarus, Armenia, Moldova and Romania, and at the end of 2017, Hungary was added to this list," notes the expert.

"If there were no ASF in Ukraine and provided that the "appetites" of Moldova remained at the level of 2014 and Armenia at the level of 2016, we could sell for an additional 6 thousand tons of fresh, chilled or frozen pig meat. In money, it is, respectively, more than $ 12 million," adds she.

It bears reminding that as of early 2018 the number of pigs in Ukraine was 6.1 million. This is by 8.2% or 0.55 million animal units less on the corresponding date 2017.
